The fort was built by Hyder Ali, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, in 1766 AD, and was later taken over by his son Tipu Sultan. The fort served as a military base and strategic center for the rulers of Mysore to control the trade routes between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The fort is a beautiful architectural marvel and is surrounded by a moat, which has now been converted into a garden. The fort has two main entrances, one on the east and the other on the west, which are decorated with beautiful carvings and inscriptions in Persian and Arabic. Inside the fort, there are several structures, including a mosque, a granary, and a palace. The fort also has a Hanuman temple inside it, which is believed to be one of the oldest temples in the town.
Today, the Palakkad Fort is a major tourist attraction and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The fort is also used as a venue for cultural events and programs, including the annual Palakkad Fort Music Festival.
